The mill
Wyedean Spinning Mill spins fleece into finished hand-knitting, crochet and weaving yarn in the Wye Valley — named for the River Wye and the Forest of Dean that surround it.
We are a small mill by design. British heritage-breed wool is picked, carded, drafted, spun, plied, skeined and set into finished yarn on a single production line, and leaves as clean, undyed skeins and cones. Nothing is sent out to be finished elsewhere — the whole chain sits under one roof.
We specialise in blank bases for dyers who want a traceable, British heritage-breed yarn at a competitive price — bright, even and ready to take colour. And because the line is ours, we can spin small: single-kilo runs of blends and plant-fibre yarns, made to order.
Every fleece we spin is British. We buy from British flocks and keep the wool in the British supply chain, so a Wyedean base can be traced to home-grown fibre — and choosing it helps keep British wool, and the people who grow it, in work.
We keep our own yarn undyed because colour is the dyer's craft, not ours. A Wyedean base is a starting point — bright and even and ready to take dye — for the people who do that part beautifully.

Clean, round, dependable bases spun from British heritage breeds, in the weights dyers reach for most — bright white and natural shades, ready to take colour.
Bluefaced Leicester
Fine, soft and with real lustre — every bit the equal of merino, and proudly British. A smooth base for next-to-skin knits, shawls and finer weaving.
Hardy British base
Springy, hard-wearing and honest — the workhorse, spun from robust native breeds. Bounce and structure for socks, sweaters and everyday wool.
Undyed & natural
Bright white for saturated colour, plus the natural browns and greys of coloured British breeds, for dyeing over a warmer ground.
The range is still taking shape, so the weights and put-ups here are our planned first line rather than a finished catalogue. Dyers and shops: get in touch and we'll send bases and sample details as soon as they're ready.

From fleece to skein
From raw fleece to labelled skein — the journey every Wyedean yarn takes, spun here in the Wye Valley.
- Sorted & scoured
British heritage-breed fleece is graded and scoured — washed clean of its grease and dirt — until it's bright and ready to spin.
- Picking & blending
The fibre is opened out, teased and blended to an even, consistent mass before carding.
- Carding
Fibres are combed into a soft, aligned web and gathered into a continuous sliver.
- Drafting
The sliver is drawn down finer and more even, setting up the weight of the finished yarn.
- Spinning
Twist is added to turn the drafted fibre into a single strand with strength and character.
- Plying
Singles are twisted together into a balanced 2- or 3-ply — round, stable and ready to wear.
- Skeining
Yarn is wound off into hanks at a set length, ready to be finished and, later, dyed.
- Twist-setting
The skeins are set so the yarn hangs straight and behaves on the needle or loom.
- Labelling
Each skein is banded, weighed and labelled with its base, weight and lot — traceable to the fibre it came from.
Your wool, your yarn
Contract spinning
Keep a few good sheep and don't know what to do with the wool? We'll turn your own clip into finished yarn — spun small, close to home, and returned under your own name.
Small flocks fall through the gaps. Too few fleeces to interest the wool traders, and shearers who'd rather not turn out for a handful of sheep — so good British wool ends up composted or burnt. It's a waste, and it doesn't have to be that way.
Send us your clip and we'll run it through the mill just as we do our own: cleaned, carded, spun, plied, skeined and set into proper hand-knitting, crochet or weaving yarn. Your flock's wool comes back as something you can knit, sell at the farm gate, or give away — knowing exactly where every skein began.
Heritage and rare breeds are just what we like to work with. Small quantities are welcome, and we can blend fleeces together or add other fibres on request — tell us what you're after.

- Your fleece comes in
Send us your clip, or we can shear the flock for you if you're in the three counties.
- We spin it
Your wool goes through the mill and comes out as clean, finished yarn — skeins or cones, to the weight you've chosen.
- Yarn back to you
Your own wool returns as your own yarn, ready to knit, weave, sell or give — with a story only your flock can tell.
